In Reception we provide a vibrant, creative, vocabulary rich and nurturing learning environment for every child. We understand that every child is unique and through our learning environment, we encourage the children to make their own discoveries, spark their curiosity and support them to become confident, self-assured and resilient individuals. Reception is the beginning of each child’s learning journey through to Key Stage 1 and 2 and into Key Stage 3. We want the children to be happy, successful and develop a love of learning so that they can reach their full potential.

We have so much fun in Reception exploring, learning and playing together. We really enjoy getting to know the children and seeing them develop new friendships, that will move with them throughout their school years. We work hard to establish routines and nurture independence. We are so proud of all our children and how they show such enthusiasm and perseverance with their learning. Our first topic in Autumn 1 ‘Inside Out’ enables us to explore how unique and special we all are through the use of a range of books and stories including ‘The Colour Monster’, ‘Only One Me’, ‘Super Duper You’ and ‘Amazing’. This learning helps us to understand ourselves and our classmates and work together as part of a team.

The classrooms are set up to promote different areas of learning and we have learning labs both inside and outside. Activities are planned weekly for the different learning areas to either enhance or develop the children’s learning. Children can access the learning labs during continuous provision and rainbow challenges are set up to ensure that all children access different areas of learning throughout the week.

Phonics is taught daily using The Little Wandle Program to support Early Reading. We want the children to develop a love of reading, so we have chosen texts carefully, to ensure that the texts support children with their learning, introduce them to new vocabulary and develops their imagination and enjoyment of books.

Early Writing is developed throughout the year, starting with funky finger activities and dough disco to develop the children’s fine motor skills, before progressing to daily handwriting using the letter family formation. We have chosen to use Drawing Club as an approach to Early Writing as it encourages the children to use their imagination and become illustrators and writers. It also develops their vocabulary and language.

Our Maths learning shows us how we can be ‘Maths Magicians’ and use our super knowledge of numbers and shapes to find patterns and solve problems. The children are real superstars, showing us how they can use these skills in different parts of their learning, discovery and play throughout the day.

Discovery time and continuous provision gives the children the opportunity to develop and build on their Characteristics of Effective Learning which is ‘Playing and Exploring, ‘Active Learning’ and ‘Creating and Thinking Critically’.

Every day is full of new discovery, questions and challenges. Fireflies and Dragonflies amaze us every minute of every day!

We are also really looking forward to exploring our other topics throughout the year:
